The Wellwood Scribes of Lindenhurst completed two trades on Saturday afternoon, an in attempt to shake up an underachieving squad that has been hovering around .500 all season.
The first deal was the big one - an eight-player extravaganza that saw the Scribes import Ben Sheets, Ichiro Suzuki, Kevin Youkilis and Ken Griffey from the Oswego Lakers in exchange for Johan Santana, Ryan Howard, Aramis Ramirez and Aaron Rowand. New Jersey Bandits Owner/GM Chris Forster was visibly shaken after the move, having diligently pursued Rowand all day only to be stymied at the last minute.
The top of the Scribes' lineup will present a unique challenge to opposing pitchers now - Ichiro, Chone Figgins and Curtis Granderson all bat from the left side of the plate against righties and can wreak havoc on the basepaths. The Lakers added some power to their lineup in Howard and Ramirez, but now lack a true leadoff hitter at the top of the order.
The second Scribes' trade was almost anti-climactic; it was a quiet exchange that saw Brad Penny shipped to the West Side Stories for Sean Gallagher. Penny began the season in the Scribes rotation but quickly fell out of favor with Owner/GM Jim Baumbach. He will try to get it together on the West Side, where Penny will likely replace Scott Kazmir in the Stories' rotation. Gallagher plays no obvious role in the Scribes' plans, but Baumbach might be looking at him as a trading chip when the St. Jack's Crusaders come calling.

Sean Marshall, not Gallagher.
